Teachings & Tasawwuf
The Science of Purifying the Heart and Drawing Near to Allah
What is Sufism (Tasawwuf)?
"Tasawwuf is the spiritual essence of Islam – the science of purifying the heart, beautifying the soul, and drawing near to Allah through love, remembrance, and self-effacement."
It is the path that transforms knowledge into inner experience and worship into living presence. Below you will find answers to fundamental questions about the spiritual path, organized for both beginners and advanced seekers.
Basic Concepts
Fundamental questions for those beginning their spiritual journey
What is the goal of a Sufi?
The ultimate goal of every Sufi is Qurb-e-Ilahi – to reach closeness with Allah, and Deedar-e-Haq – to witness His Divine Reality.
It is a journey from self to the Beloved, where every breath becomes a step toward the Divine Presence.
What does the word 'Sufi' mean?
The word "Sufi" is derived from safā, meaning purity. A Sufi is one whose heart is purified from ego, desire, and illusion, polished until it reflects only the Light of Allah.
What is the foundation of Sufism?
The foundation of Sufism lies in the Qur'an, the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and the teachings of the Auliya Allah.
Every authentic Sufi path begins and ends with the guidance of Divine Revelation and Prophetic example.
How is Sufism different from Shari'ah?
Shari'ah governs the outer actions of a believer – prayer, fasting, charity, conduct – while Tasawwuf governs the inner state – sincerity, humility, love, and remembrance.
Together, they form one complete faith: Shari'ah is the body, Tasawwuf is the soul.
What is the sign of a true Sufi?
A true Sufi is humble, patient, merciful, and filled with love for all of Allah's creation. He hides his states, avoids fame, and carries light in his heart – a light that comforts others and draws them closer to Allah.
Key Terms
Essential spiritual terminology and their meanings
Murshid
A Murshid is a spiritual guide who has already walked the path to Allah. He helps purify the heart of the seeker, corrects their inner states, and transmits spiritual light through love, guidance, and prayer.
Murīd
A Murīd is the one who truly wills (irada) to reach Allah. By surrendering his will to the Murshid and to Allah's command, the Murīd walks the path of discipline, remembrance, and love until his own will becomes one with the Divine Will.
Zikr
Zikr is the living remembrance of Allah – not only by tongue, but by heart, thought, and breath. It purifies the soul, fills the heart with light, and keeps the seeker connected to the Divine Presence at every moment.
Nafs
Nafs is the lower self – the part of a human that resists Divine will and seeks worldly satisfaction. The Sufi path is a journey of taming the Nafs, transforming it from:
- Nafs-e-Ammarah – commanding evil
- Nafs-e-Lawwama – self-reproaching
- Nafs-e-Mutma'innah – peaceful
When it reaches peace, the Nafs itself becomes a friend of Allah.
Faqr
Faqr means true spiritual poverty – not lacking wealth, but being free of all dependence except on Allah.
"Al-faqru fakhri" – "Poverty is my pride." - Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
It is the station where one's heart is empty of everything except Divine Presence.
Silsila
A Silsila is an unbroken spiritual lineage that connects each Murshid to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Through this chain, Divine blessings (faiz) and light (noor) are transmitted from heart to heart, keeping the original light of Prophethood alive in every age.

Understanding the journey of spiritual transformation
Fanā and Baqā
Fanā means the annihilation of the self – where ego dissolves in the remembrance of Allah until nothing remains but Him.
Baqā is the state that follows, where the seeker lives through Allah, speaks through Him, and becomes a vessel for His attributes.
Ma'rifah
Ma'rifah is the intimate recognition of Allah – not through intellect or books, but through direct experience of the heart. It is when the veil lifts and the seeker perceives Divine Reality as the only true existence.
Ishq-e-Ilahi
Ishq-e-Ilahi is the fire of love that consumes everything but Allah. It is a love that purifies, transforms, and draws the lover closer to the Beloved with every breath, until the lover becomes lost in the Beloved.
Stages of Annihilation
Fana fi'l-Shaikh
Annihilation in the spiritual guide – surrendering one's will completely to the Murshid's guidance.

Spiritual Practices
Methods and disciplines for spiritual growth
Zikr-e-Qalbi
Heart invocation of Allah's names, particularly Ism-e-Allah Zaat, under the guidance of a perfect Murshid. This practice awakens the spiritual centers and illuminates the heart.
Muraqaba
Spiritual meditation and contemplation upon Divine Presence and Attributes. Focusing one's heart upon Allah in deep silence and awareness, until His Presence is felt within.
Suhbat
Company of the righteous and sitting in the gatherings of the Murshid. Spiritual blessings are transmitted through the presence and company of the awakened ones.

Lataif-e-Sitta (Six Spiritual Centers)
Subtle points of light within the human being that serve as stations for spiritual awakening:
Through zikr and purification, these centers awaken, filling the seeker with Divine light and awareness.
Haqiqat-e-Muhammadi ﷺ
It is the eternal Light and Reality of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ – the first creation of Allah, from whose light all existence was born.
Every Sufi path leads back to this Light, for it is the source of all Divine manifestation. The Prophet's Light is the bridge between the Divine and creation, the hidden essence behind every atom of existence.
Insān-e-Kāmil (The Perfect Human)
Insān-e-Kāmil is the human being who has become the perfect reflection of Divine attributes – fully surrendered, pure in heart, and united with the will of Allah.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the ultimate Insān-e-Kāmil, the mirror of Divine perfection. Every true seeker walks his path to mirror that perfection.
Tajalli (Divine Manifestation)
Tajalli-e-Zaat
Manifestation of the Divine Essence – when the Essence of Allah reveals itself through the veil of creation.
Tajalli-e-Asma wa Sifaat
Manifestation of Divine Names and Attributes – the reflection of Allah's Names within the seeker's character and perception.
Deedar-e-Haq (Vision of the Truth)
Deedar-e-Haq is not seen by the eyes, but by the light of the heart. It is the moment when all veils are lifted, and the seeker witnesses the Presence of Allah in everything – beyond form, beyond place, beyond time.
It is the highest joy a soul can taste.
Qurb-e-Ilahi (Divine Nearness)
It is the spiritual proximity of the heart to its Lord. It doesn't mean physical nearness, but being absorbed in remembrance, love, and surrender.
When the heart reaches Qurb, it no longer sees itself – only Allah.
